NSDR might be my favorite way to calm an anxious brain

Non-Sleep Deep Rest, or NSDR for short, is a practice that allows you to relax and rejuvenate without actually falling asleep. It's a bit like hitting a reset button for your mind and body. NSDR doesn't require a long time commitment – even just a few minutes can make a big difference.

The Science Behind NSDR

Studies have shown that NSDR can have a calming effect on the nervous system. When you engage in NSDR, your body enters a state of deep relaxation, similar to what happens during meditation. This state helps reduce the production of stress hormones, such as cortisol, which are often elevated in people with anxiety.

How to Practice NSDR

NSDR can be tailored to suit your preferences, but here's a simple way to get started:

  1. Find a Quiet Space: Choose a comfortable, quiet place where you won't be disturbed.

  2. Get Comfortable: Sit or lie down in a comfortable position.

  3. Focus on Your Breath: Close your eyes and take slow, deep breaths. Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth.

  4. Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Starting from your toes, tense and then relax each muscle group in your body, working your way up to your head. This helps release physical tension.

  5. Visualize Calm: Imagine a peaceful place, like a beach or a forest. Picture yourself there, experiencing the sights, sounds, and sensations.

  6. Stay Present: If your mind starts to wander, gently bring your focus back to your breath or your chosen visualization.
